This year, Turkey is the country of Honor at Cartes, the reason is the exponential growth in terms of credit and debit card usage, making Turkey the largest ATM market in Europe and one of the most advanced in terms of implementing new technologies such as a National ID card which includes EMW payment functions.

Looking back at the 2011 SESAMES Awards Ceremony

Yesterday evening, the SESAMES trophies were awarded to some of the most innovative projects from the industry.10 prizes were given during a ceremony at the Automobile Club de France in Paris in a show hosted by Anette Burgdorf.

If you are present at CARTES 2011 this week, you are welcome to check the SESAMES Award Stand at the back of exhibition hall 4. Notice boards introduce all winning solutions to visitors and provide QR codes to direct you to their booth on the exhibition floor.

 

2011 World Card Summit Keynote

The World Card Summit brought incredible personalities from the industry to share their thoughts and insights about the Industry and the future of the industry.

4 topics have been discussed this morning, preceded by a presentation from Marc Bertin, chairman of EuroSmart about trends and potential growth expected in the Industry, and Scott Mulloy, CTO of ISIS, presenting what the future of mobile payment will look like.

World Card Summit @ CARTES 2011

Next week, the 2011^th edition of CARTES & IDENTIFICATION will open with the prestigious World Card Summit. After last year’s success, the event will welcome again 9 top executives from the digital security and SMART card industry to discuss on various topics.

NFC on wheels

A few years ago, James Bond movies started to feature cars controlled through a cell phone. At CARTES this year, some of our exhibitors will demonstrate their knowledge and know-how in implementing such solutions for the mass market.

Oberthur Technologies will feature the Oberthur NFC Car and show how your cell phone can replace your keychain and offer many more services for the car renting industry.

Using NFC technologies through your phone you can now:

• Geo-localize your car
• Lock / unlock your car doors
• Start your car engine
• Check on your safety equipment

This solution is currently being tested in Toulouse (in the south of France) since the beginning of October as part of experiment in managing car fleet for companies and administration.

NXP will also feature the first ever-created eBike, entirely equipped with NFC, RFID and secure technologies.  The bike allows its driver not only to geo-localize his vehicle and start it, but also to monitor its energy consumption from his phone, automatically pay highway tolls and even pre-program emergency calls in case of an accident.

Turkey gets ready for CARTES

Why is Turkey such a dynamic market in the smart card industry?  

In just a few years, Turkey became one of the most advanced European countries in terms of credit and debit card usage. It is now, with a 40% growth in the amount of cards produced over the last 5 years, the largest ATM market in Europe. But Turkey is not only a major actor in terms of sheer numbers; the country is one of the most advanced in terms of implementing new technologies. For example, the country is the first one to deliver a national identity card which include an EMV payment function, also the first commercial roll-out of an NFC mobile payment and loyalty solution was launched last February by a Turkish bank, Garanti as part of a partnership with Avea and Gemalto.
